is based on the biblical model of discipleship and supported by scientific research. Jesus Christ said “go and make disciples” which indicates ongoing supportive and encouraging relationships. Science also points to the fact that we were made to thrive on positive relationships. Children who are mentored grow in self-confidence, responsibility, and academic performance. According to a study performed by Public/Private Ventures (P/PV) in 2000 and distributed by the U.S. Department of Education, mentored students are:
Our mentors are encouragers, advisors, friends, and advocates. These positive relationships are the key to lasting change in the lives of these children and a long-term permanent impact on this community.
CoH is a mentorship program designed specifically to match South Dallas youth with caring, adult mentors who will partner with one child from 4th grade through high school graduation.
We start the mentorship relationship with 4th graders because research suggests this is the best time in a child’s life to start mentoring. While infants and toddlers are learning fundamental concepts about people and human interactions, 10- to 14-year-olds are forming fundamental concepts about society and their potential role in it. Thus, we want to match every 4th grade student who receives parental permission with a mentor as soon as possible.
Because a one-on-one mentorship relationship provides the potential for a vast amount of positive influences in the students’ lives, the goals for our children span across multiple dimensions, including their mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
